I’ve already been four months in Colombia as a volunteer working with Alianza por la Solidaridad (ApS) in Tumaco (Colombia). Before arriving, I didn\u00b4t have a very accurate idea of what would be my tasks. But now, after this time, I can explain what I did and learned during my volunteering experience.<\/p>\n

The area in which I worked is Infrastructure and Housing that works in 5 different types of projects.<\/p>\n

– Water sanitation: mainly latrines.<\/p>\n

– Water supply: rainwater collection systems or water supply systems.<\/p>\n

– Access: bridges or other access constructions that allow the passage in flood zones.<\/p>\n

– Improvement of housing: usually related to improvement of living conditions. At the moment, the organization is building 50 houses.<\/p>\n

– Community Infrastructure. Construction or improvement of: schools, community buildings, kindergarten and school canteens, among others.<\/p>\n

My work has had two different but related parts. Especially in the beginning I devoted myself to getting to know the projects being undertaken by ApS in Nari\u00f1o. I visited them and talked with the technicians to learn more about them: I accompanied technical surveillance, material deliveries, auto-construction workshops, developed designs and found technical solutions.<\/p>\n

Once I knew the situation, I started with Carlos Puentes (the other volunteer in Buenaventura) to define the document we still have to\u00a0 develop these months and that has the objective to\u00a0 propose improvements and alternatives for the projects currently underway. These alternatives are based on various aspects: propose improvements to existing solutions by modifying or adding some elements; as well as propose alternative solutions either because they can change the settings, or because they can change the priorities of the organization seeking other types of actions and technical solutions.<\/p>\n

Some examples of what we are proposing are:<\/p>\n

– A water trap to remove the first dirty rain water.<\/p>\n

– Alternatives for latrines: elements allocation, connections and different materials.<\/p>\n

– Proposal to use other materials such as plastic, immunized wood, bamboo, ferro-cement, etc.<\/p>\n

– Preparation of designs and budgets of alternatives.<\/p>\n

– Use of Community technologies and solutions if possible affecting the whole community.<\/p>\n

– Proposals for possible connections and topics of joint actions between the different areas (social, livelihood and infrastructure). With the objective to make all development processes as effective and cooperative as possible.<\/p>\n

The purpose of this document is to provide ideas and possible options to give the infrastructure technicians a useful tool from which alternatives for the projects to be undertaken can be derived, if necessary. Hopefully it can be used like this, and will be useful for future projects of the organization. From my point of view, I think I’ve learned a lot and some proposals we have made are useful and possible to develop. It could mean an advancement or improvement in some projects to be undertaken<\/p>\n

Ya llevo 4 meses en Colombia como voluntario colaborando con Alianza Por la Solidaridad (APS) en Tumaco. Antes de llegar no ten\u00eda una idea muy exacta de cuales iban a ser mis tareas aqu\u00ed. Pero ahora despu\u00e9s de este tiempo ya puedo explicar qu\u00e9 es lo que hice y aprend\u00ed durante mi experiencia de voluntariado.<\/p>\n

El \u00e1rea con el que he colaborado ha sido el de infraestructura y vivienda que trabaja en 5 distintos tipos de proyectos.<\/p>\n
