He told me a story that I will always remember. I will try to briefly summarize it:

‘‘When the Spanish arrived to America and met the local indigenous populations, they were interested in the resources of the land. Among others, they found precious metals such as silver on the continent and gold on the Colombian territory. This metal was very important to the Spanish for its economic value. But for the indigenous population of that time, it was important due to their view of the world: for them their gods were most important because they had a direct relation to the natural forces which provided them with food, materials and other essential elements for life, such as plants, animals, water and maybe the most important, the sun. For the indigenous people, the value of the gold was symbolic representing the color and the brightness of the sun.

Although it seems incredible, the Spanish owned an object that allowed the indigenous people to have the sun in their own hands, the mirror. And thus the Spanish and indigenous exchanged (in case an exchange really took place…) gold for mirrors’’.

This simple but heavy story, made me understand from a different point of view the very different mentality and principles of both cultures at that time. Today, hundreds of years later, this has changed and both cultures are not what they had been before. They have adapted to the changes of each era. And according to the history and the evidences of the present, one of the two cultures clearly prevails today, maintaining their most basic principles. This is the one named occidental related directly to capitalism, which values economic growth above everything else, promotes a cultural globalization and thus tries to neglect or make invisible the other cultures that are different than the mainstream.

Speaking from the observations and perceptions that I made while being in contact with these groups, I think that different situations in the indigenous populations are generated, .that, although they might be normal, caught my attention. This originates from the cultural globalization that has modified some specific aspects of the local and minority cultures:

– One of these aspects is the stereotype of beauty related to physical aspects. This is promoted by the occidental world and influences a large part of the population. Another point is the personal aspect related to fashion with regard to clothes, and esthetics.

– There are also some models or stereotypes regarding having success in life (football players, singers, actors, models, etc.), that are promoted and especially influence young people. These ideals stand in contrast to the daily and traditional indigenous life, that is more local, rural and directly related to nature.

– And finally and directly related to my volunteering experience I also have to talk about construction materials. In relation to this last example, the priority at global level lies in the use of durable (or hard-wearing) materials, such as concrete and bricks which, due to their features, are symbols of progress in this field. Other factors, such as the use as more economic, more accessible and therefore more sustainable local materials, for most people do not have the same priority as does the durability.

With this, I am not saying that concrete is a bad option, but that it is not the only and not always the best one. And I think the same about the other topics previously presented.

In brief, what I wanted to say with this simple example is that for me, the only way that is shown to us as a synonym of development is not the only and in most cases not the best one. During my work with indigenous communities I could observe that they have developed a much better sense of cooperation and solidarity than European society, much more individualistic. That, from my point of view, is something very positive they have.

Sincerely, I think that cultural diversity is very beneficial and positive for everybody if the objective is to share, integrate and cooperate. It is more useful to learn about differences than to promote unique ways which generate inequalities that moreover increase more and more. But, is this really what the current development system promotes?

Hopefully, all the money that today is invested in promoting this development system by the media, in the future will be invested in a quality education in the countries and regions, where the situation is more precarious, that usually are those countries named ‘‘developing countries’’. Of course it would be an education planned and leaded by the local people with their participation, respecting and valuing their cultural identity and features. In the end, education is what defines who we are, and that make us more conscious about our identity, reality and our rights in addition to develop our capacities.

This idea could seem a utopia but sincerely, I think we need to believe in some utopia due to the reality we live. Otherwise some unfair situations will never change.

One day, I was talking to a very good Colombian friend of mine.
