The winner is Ky\u00f6sti M\u00e4kel\u00e4 from Finland<\/strong> for his short story \u201cSurvivor\u201d inspired in the picture \u201cHebron, one of the streets of the Old City\u201d taken by Miriam Ramos (Palestine\u2019s volunteer). Congratulations!<\/p>\n

Members of the jury: Maria Chiara Lesi (GVC), Carmen del Vecchio (Haiti\u2019s volunteer) y Erika Bozzato (Lebanon\u2019s volunteer).<\/em><\/p>\n

Jury\u2019s explanation: \u201cThe Survivor \u00a0was laborated on\u00a0such an essential photo. Each sentence is very accurate and the writer\u2019s feelings can be really felt. From the story the reader can imagine step by step exactly the situation. The writing is tragic and passionate at the same time, building on the photo and integrating with it.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

We received 7 short stories and we also would like to thank all the participants!<\/p>\n

2)<\/strong> <\/span>Miriam Ramos – Palestine – \u00abHebron, one of the streets of the Old City\u00bb.<\/p><\/div>\n

SURVIVOR<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

I walk down the streets.
\nAll I can see is destruction.
\nI can see our history, shattered.
\nIt\u2019s just a shadow of its former glory.
\nShadow of peace.<\/p>\n

My grandfather told me about this place, but I can\u2019t recognise it even I try.
\nIt can\u2019t be the same place.
\nI don\u2019t want this to be it.
\nThat place I was told about was full of happiness.
\nFull of live.
\nNow it\u2019s gone.
\nDreams has been buried here.
\nAnd for what.
\nFor fairness.
\nFor greed.
\nI pass a building.
\nAs I pass it I can hear a voice.
\nI look carefully inside.<\/p>\n

There\u2019s a child.
\nSomeones first.
\nSomeones pride.
\nObserving the world as he sees it.
\nWhit out hate.
\nHe doesn\u2019t see the things as I see.
\nI envy him.<\/p>\n

The boy is sitting on the floor.
\nHis mother is sleeping next to him.
\nShe has given everything.
\nShe has done her best.
\nThat\u2019s enough.
\nEnough for now.
\nThey are in a room that use to be someones home, someones sanctuary.
\nNow it\u2019s just pile of rocks and dust.<\/p>\n

I take my backpack off from my shoulders and I take a small packet, filled whit food.
\nI leave it on the table, next to the broken window.
\nThey will need it more than I do
\nI need to do it for them.
\nI need to do it for myself.<\/p>\n

I arrive to the place my grandfather told me to come.
\nI can recognise it, but I still don\u2019t know why I\u2019m here.
\nI sitt down and look at it.
\nI\u2019m there trough the night.
\nAs the sun starts to rise I think I finally understand.
\nI know now why I needed to come here.<\/p>\n

I have never thought about it.
\nMaybe because it\u2019s nothing special.
\nIt\u2019s a shame.
\nI should have given it more respect.<\/p>\n

There\u2019s a three.
\nThree that I planted as a boy.
\nIt has no leaves on it, just small buds.
\nIts naked figure is just dancing in the wind.
\nIt\u2019s been there.
\nIt has seen a lot.
\nIt\u2019s one whit it\u2019s environment.<\/p>\n

You can rip off its body.
\nYou can hurt it.
\nIt\u2019s helpless against your violence.
\nIt doesn\u2019t matter.
\nIt will die anyway.
\nIt does every year.
\nBut still, it\u2019s something.
\nSomething that matters.
\nIt\u2019s a survivor.<\/p>\n

When the times are at their darkest it will hide it\u2019s self.
\nAll the energy it haves.
\nIt will wait.
\nIt will try to hang on no matter what happens.
\nPatient is it\u2019s strength.
\nWhen the sun will rise again so will it.
\nIt will bloom again.
\nIts just have to wait.
\nTimes will get better.
\nEven if it can\u2019t be sure about it, it has fait.<\/p>\n

When the sun will shine upon it once again, it knows.
\nIt knows when to take action.
\nWhen to try again.
\nWhen to give everything you have.<\/p>\n

Sun is rising.
\nNow I see more than just shadows.
\nNow understand what my grandfather wanted me to learn.<\/p>\n

He saw what I was becoming.
\nHe saw that I needed to learn.
\nLearn how to give up my anger, my bitterness.
\nAct of violence wouldn\u2019t be the way to change things.
\nI would be just changing myself.
\nIt wouldn\u2019t change anything else in the end.<\/p>\n

As I head back to my loved ones I see a graffiti on the wall.
\nI stop at it.
\nI look at it and I see the truth in it.
\nIt makes me calm.
\nNo matter what happens this will always be it.
\nPalestine.<\/p>\n
