Despite its strength, the effects of climate change, disease, and the reduced availability of agricultural inputs have taken a hard toll on the industry.\u00a0 Coffee production has been declining for several years and with it the livelihoods of rural farmers. Today however, Haitian farmers are receiving much need assistance through several local organizations.\u00a0 Alianza together with the local farming cooperative Camdec, the Spanish Agency for International Development Cooperation (AECID), and \u00a0the Haitian organization CROSE , have \u00a0been working together to provide extension training, equipment and other agricultural inputs to increase the quantity and quality of the coffee harvest and with it the livelihoods of the local farmers and their communities.<\/p>\n<p>During a recent visit to Thiotte, one of Haiti\u2019s largest coffee producing regions, the work of Alianza could be seen in many of the parcels. Alianza has helped to establish model parcels which serve as a kind of farming field school. In these parcels the sometimes skeptical farmers can see first-hand the benefits of new agricultural techniques.\u00a0 In addition, Alianza is assisting in the battle against coffee rust. Coffee rust which has devastated many coffee plantations throughout Latin America and the Caribbean is being mitigated by the production and supply of byol. Byol is a locally produced and all natural fertilizer and insecticide. \u00a0Alianza with its partners has already distributed over 400 gallons of byol to the project\u2019s 200 beneficiaries.<\/p>\n<p>In Thiotte, like in many other parts of the country, Hurricane Matthew had a devastating impact on the agricultural sector. The storm\u2019s high winds destroyed many of the coffee trees and those remaining lost much of their foliage. Despite the severity, the impact was mitigated by field regeneration techniques instituted during Alianza\u2019s work on the ground. These techniques included the trimming back aging coffee trees some of which were over 60 years old. This undoubtedly saved many of the trees as they were less vulnerable to the high winds of the storm.<\/p>\n<p>Supporting extension work will strengthen local farmers and their communities against the difficulties of a changing environment. The work of Alianza and their local partners will continue to ensure the viability and success of the Haitian coffee sector for years to come.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>El caf\u00e9: fuente de energ\u00eda y de ingresos para las comunidades rurales de Hait\u00ed<\/h2>\n<p>Los productores de caf\u00e9 de Hait\u00ed han sido reconocidos por generaciones. El terreno monta\u00f1oso y el suelo f\u00e9rtil del pa\u00eds, que permite la producci\u00f3n de\u00a0un caf\u00e9 de calidad excepcional, sigue siendo uno de los elementos clave de la industria agr\u00edcola del pa\u00eds. A pesar de su fortaleza, los efectos del cambio clim\u00e1tico, las enfermedades y la reducci\u00f3n de la disponibilidad de insumos agr\u00edcolas han afectado duramente a la industria. La producci\u00f3n de caf\u00e9 ha estado disminuyendo durante varios a\u00f1os y con ella los medios de subsistencia de los agricultores rurales. Hoy, sin embargo, los agricultores de Hait\u00ed est\u00e1n recibiendo mucha ayuda por medio de varias organizaciones locales. Alianza ha ayudado a establecer parcelas modelo que sirven como una especie de escuelas agr\u00edcolas. En estas parcelas, los agricultores, a veces esc\u00e9pticos, pueden ver de primera mano los beneficios de nuevas t\u00e9cnicas agr\u00edcolas. Adem\u00e1s, Alianza est\u00e1 ayudando en la batalla contra\u00a0enfermedades en este cultivo, como la roya del caf\u00e9, que ha devastado muchas plantaciones de caf\u00e9 en toda Am\u00e9rica Latina y el Caribe.\u00a0Para combatir esta plaga, Alianza, junto con sus socios, ya ha distribuido m\u00e1s de 400 galones de byol, un fertilizante natural e insecticida de producci\u00f3n local, a los 200 beneficiarios del proyecto.<\/p>\n<p>En Thiotte, como en muchas otras partes del pa\u00eds, el hurac\u00e1n Matthew tuvo un impacto devastador en el sector agr\u00edcola.
