Senegal is quite safe so no risk of repatriation\u201d<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> is one of the messages I kept from <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">the<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> induction training that took place in Madrid, a few days before leaving for Senegal. <\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335551550&quot;:6,&quot;335551620&quot;:6,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The country is quite safe all right. However, little did we know that the risk of being repatriated would not only exist but also become reality. Of course, no one could have ever foreseen that a pandemic was going to wreak havoc on the entire world.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335551550&quot;:6,&quot;335551620&quot;:6,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Whenever I go back to the repatriation episode, I <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">can\u2019t<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> help but <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">think<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> of that <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">phrase<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. At first, I thought my brain remembered it as a perverse way to mock me. I was mistaken. By engraving the phrase and the episode in my memory, my brain simply wanted them to be proof of how even the least expected things can happen. \u201c<\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">You better be prepared for anything, you know, just in case\u201d <\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">is<\/span> <span data-contrast=\"auto\">the underlying message<\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> However, such epiphany would come only later, at the very end of what I now call the five (5) stages of repatriation.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335551550&quot;:6,&quot;335551620&quot;:6,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Not so long <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">ago I heard about the K<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00fc<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">bler \u2013 Ross grief cycle<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, according to which people who suffer a <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">loss go through <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">five (<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">5<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">)<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> stages<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">: denial, anger, bargaining, depression<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">acceptance.<\/span> <span data-contrast=\"auto\">The <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">model<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> ruminated in my mind for a while until I started to find some similarities with my recent personal experience. <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Had I gone through a similar cycle myself? Indeed, I did.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335551550&quot;:6,&quot;335551620&quot;:6,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">There was denial. \u201c<\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Repatriation? Surely, <\/span><\/i><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">it\u2019s<\/span><\/i><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> not happening. <\/span><\/i><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The situation is not that serious! I won\u2019t leave<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201d.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335551550&quot;:6,&quot;335551620&quot;:6,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">There was anger, but mostly frustration. \u201c<\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Why is this happening <\/span><\/i><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">right now?<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201d \u201c<\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Can\u2019t it wait some more days?\u201d \u201cI am being robbed of my last month!\u201d<\/span><\/i><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335551550&quot;:6,&quot;335551620&quot;:6,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Afterwards<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> numbness<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> came<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">P<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">acking, checking in, showing my passport, <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">gett<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">ing on and off the planes<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> were<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> all<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> actions I wa<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">s not aware of, as if<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> I <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">had<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> completely detached from my body. <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Somehow, I <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">had <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">switched to autopilot mode.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335551550&quot;:6,&quot;335551620&quot;:6,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">A <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">week or so after <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">having returned<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> home, the 4th stage kicked in: nostalgia<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, where <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">anything would <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">remind me of my <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">life<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> in Kolda<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.<\/span> <span data-contrast=\"auto\"><i>\u201cThis was the time of the day where I woul<\/i><i>d sit on the terrace and watch the sunset.\u201d<\/i><\/span> <i>\u201cI can\u2019t believe I am <\/i><i>missing <\/i><i>yassa<\/i> <i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">poulet<\/span><\/i><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, <\/span><\/i><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">and <\/span><\/i><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">thiebou<\/span><\/i> <i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">dienne<\/span><\/i><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">!<\/span><\/i><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201d <\/span><\/i><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cIt\u2019s so quiet here.<\/span><\/i><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201d<\/span><\/i> <span data-contrast=\"auto\">The <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">familiar <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">background <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">noise<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">s, <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">all of a sudden<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">,<\/span> <span data-contrast=\"auto\">had <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">disappeared. <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> b<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">aa<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">th<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">e<\/span> <span data-contrast=\"auto\">call<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">s<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> to prayer<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">the<\/span> <span data-contrast=\"auto\">ding <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">ding<\/span> <span data-contrast=\"auto\">ding<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> the <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">jakartas<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> would make when turned off<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> the <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">sounds <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">of the bustling <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">daily market<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, all of it was gone<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">F<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">inding closure<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> is not easy<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, espe<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">cially when you <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">d<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">o<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">n\u2019t<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> get the <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">chance <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">to properly say goodbye. But in the end, <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">I<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> reach<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">ed<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> the last <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">stage: acc<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">eptance. <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">I<\/span> <span data-contrast=\"auto\">accept<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">ed. I <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">let go<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. I readjusted to the life back home, <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">to <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">the new normal pandemic-times lifestyle.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> And e<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">ventually, <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">I <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">move<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">d<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> on<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335551550&quot;:6,&quot;335551620&quot;:6,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Being repatriated for whatever reason <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">it\u2019s<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> never easy.<\/span> <span data-contrast=\"auto\">It\u2019s<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> difficult to be<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> prepa<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">r<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">ed <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">for<\/span> <span data-contrast=\"auto\">the eventuality <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">of l<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">eaving before time<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Y<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">ou <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">don\u2019t<\/span> <span data-contrast=\"auto\">really<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> think<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> of it<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> as a possibility<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, especially if you are deployed in a low-risk country<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. At least, I <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">know it never occurred to me.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335551550&quot;:6,&quot;335551620&quot;:6,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Now that a couple of months have passed, I see my repatriation not only as a cautionary tale, but also as one of the most important lessons learnt thus far as <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">a<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> EU AID Volunteer. In the humanitarian and in the development field, your plans are going to be derailed hundreds of times. Don\u2019t take it personally. It\u2019s just the way it is.
