RIGHT TO MEMORY

When I visited the Historic Memory Center in Bogotá I saw an exhibition that impressed me. The exhibition was about murdered bodies thrown at the Magdalena River by actors of the arm conflict. Although it deals with death and murders that are always grisly issues, I liked the sensitivity with which the author of the peace of work, Juan Manuel Echevarría, dealt it. He does it in a way that provoke in who look at it a feeling of sadness but also of tenderness and hope. There exists a town called Puerto Berrío in Antioquía, Colombia whose inhabitants decided to rescue the bodies of murdered people thrown in the Magdalena River, the No Name (NN), bury and put them a name and surname and care with love their tombs as if they were their own relatives. They thought that in doing so the people buried would became their Angel of light. This practice is a good example of the right to the truth and right to memory that contributes to overcome the pain of the victims of the arm conflict of this country.

Now I write below the literal words of the exhibition as expressed by the very author:

“RÉQUIEM NN 2006-2014

Éstas son tumbas de los NN, de cuerpos que en su mayoría bajan por el río Magdalena. Estos cuerpos, o pedazo de cuerpo, son rescatados y enterrados en el cementerio de Puerto Berrío, Antioquia, y la gente los «escoge» para pedirles favores a sus ánimas. A cambio de los favores recibidos, la persona se compromete a cuidar de la tumba, a ponerle flores, incluso a bautizar y a darle un nombre la NN, en ciertos, con su propio apellido. En la muerte, el NN vuelve a ser humanizado.

En lo colectivo, pienso en cómo este ritual cumple otra función: la gente de Puerto Berrío no permite, quizás inconscientemente, que los perpetradores de la violencia desaparezcan a sus víctimas. Mediante este rito es como si ellos les dijeran a los victimarios: Aquí nosotros rescatamos a los NN, los enterramos, creemos en sus almas, y nos hacen milagros; además los adoptamos y los volvemos nuestros.

En múltiples viajes por el Magdalena Medio he visitado otros cementerios como los de Puerto Triunfo, Puerto Boyacá, La Dorada, Puerto Nare, La Sierra, entre otros. En todos ellos hay NN enterrados, pero en ninguno encontré este sitio tan particular del cementerio de Puerto Berrío, a orillas del río Magdalena”.
